If you’ve ever wondered, “Is this God or just me?” this is for you.
This will help you stop guessing and start discerning.
John 10:27 – My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
Let me start by saying this clearly: God is not silent about your life. He is not watching you struggle and refusing to speak.
The confusion you feel is not because God is absent. Most times, it is because there are things competing with His voice, and you have not been taught how to separate them.
Many sincere believers pray, wait, listen, and yet they still say, “I don’t know what God is saying.”
That frustration can slowly turn into fear. Fear of making mistakes. Fear of moving ahead. Fear of missing God completely. And over time, people stop expecting to hear God at all.
But that is not God’s intention for you.
Hearing God is not reserved for prophets or pastors.
Jesus said His sheep hear His voice. That means hearing God is part of your inheritance, not a special gift for a few people.
Today, let’s talk practically. Not theory. Not church language. Real life.
These are five ways that will help you hear God clearly, consistently, and without confusion, if you are willing to practice them.
1. LEARN TO SEPARATE GOD’S VOICE FROM YOUR EMOTIONS
One of the biggest reasons people get confused is that emotions speak loudly, especially when life is heavy.
Pain has a voice. Fear has a voice. Desire has a voice. Anxiety has a voice. And if you are not careful, you will mistake emotional pressure for divine instruction.
There are seasons when you are hurt, disappointed, or desperate, and in those moments, you want God to speak quickly. But God does not shout over emotions. He speaks calmly, even when what He is saying is urgent. That is why many people act out of emotion and later say, “I thought God told me.”
Look at Elijah in 1 Kings 19. He was exhausted, afraid, and emotionally drained. When God came to speak, it was not through fire or earthquake. It was a still, small voice. That tells you something. When your emotions are loud, God’s voice is often quieter, not absent.
Practically, this means you must slow yourself down. Do not make major decisions in moments of emotional intensity.
When you feel rushed, pressured, or panicked, pause. Pray again. Sleep over it. Give your spirit time to settle. God’s voice brings clarity, not inner chaos.
I want you to start doing this intentionally. When you think God is speaking, ask yourself honestly, “Is this producing peace or panic?”
God may challenge you, but He will not confuse you.
I declare over you now that emotional noise will no longer drown out God’s voice in your life. In Jesus name.
2. USE THE WORD OF GOD AS YOUR FILTER, NOT YOUR AFTERTHOUGHT
God speaks personally, but He never contradicts His Word.
Many people get confused because they hear impressions, ideas, or inner voices, but they do not check them against Scripture. So anything that sounds spiritual begins to look like God.
Jesus showed us this clearly in Matthew 4. During His fast, the enemy spoke to Him using logic and opportunity. But Jesus did not respond emotionally. He responded with Scripture. The Word was His filter. That is why He was not confused.
You do not need to quote ten scriptures before making every decision, but your heart must be shaped by the Word. When Scripture lives inside you, it becomes easier to recognize when something is off. Something inside you will resist it.
I have seen people claim God told them to cheat, lie, abandon responsibilities, or break commitments. That was not God.
God does not speak against truth, integrity, love, or obedience. Confusion always follows when the Word is ignored.
Practically, this means you must spend time in the Bible, not rushing it. Read slowly. Think deeply. Ask simple questions. Over time, the Word becomes like a compass inside you.
I pray for you that the Word of God will rise within you as light, and every confusing voice will lose authority in your life.
3. RECOGNIZE THAT GOD CONFIRMS THROUGH PEACE, NOT EXCITEMENT
Many people mistake excitement for confirmation. They feel thrilled about an idea and assume God has spoken. But excitement fades. Peace remains.
Peace is one of God’s strongest confirmations. It does not mean the path will be easy. It means your spirit agrees with the direction, even if your mind still has questions.
Paul experienced this repeatedly. In Acts 16, he wanted to go into certain regions, but something restrained him. There was no loud voice. No dramatic sign. Just an inner restriction. Later, God redirected him. That redirection shaped the spread of the gospel.
If you are forcing a decision and peace keeps leaving, pay attention. God protects us by removing peace.
When peace is absent, confusion grows.
Here is a simple practice. After praying about a matter, wait. Observe your heart over time. Does peace increase, or does anxiety grow? God’s leading becomes clearer with time, not more chaotic.
From today, may peace become your compass. Where peace stays, you will stay. Where peace leaves, you will not force yourself. In Jesus name.
4. STOP ASKING TOO MANY PEOPLE AND START LISTENING PROPERLY
There is wisdom in counsel, but confusion comes when you consult everyone.
Many believers get confused because they ask too many voices to speak into one decision. Different opinions, different fears, different biases. The result is noise.
Rehoboam lost his kingdom because he listened to voices that fed his pride instead of wisdom. That story is not just history. It is a warning.
Choose one or two spiritually mature people who know God and know you. Do not shop for answers. Do not pressure people to tell you what you want to hear. Let confirmation come naturally.
Sometimes God confirms His voice by repetition. A message you hear. A scripture that stands out. A quiet reminder. When the same truth keeps coming, pay attention.
Henceforth, reduce the noise. Limit who you talk to. Spend more time praying than explaining your situation to people.
May the wrong counsel lose influence over your life, and godly wisdom guide your steps.
5. OBEY WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW, AND CLARITY WILL INCREASE
This is where many people struggle. They want God to speak about big things, but they ignore the small instructions He has already given.
Disobedience dulls spiritual hearing.
Samuel heard God clearly because he responded quickly, even when he did not fully understand. Obedience sharpened his hearing.
If God has been prompting you to forgive someone, let go of bitterness, change a habit, apologize, become disciplined, or adjust your priorities, and you keep delaying, confusion will increase. God does not reveal new instructions when old ones are ignored.
Start responding to what you already know. Do not wait for perfect clarity. God often reveals the next step, not the full picture.
Say this quietly to yourself now: “I am willing to obey God, even in the small things. Speak, Lord, I am listening.”
Let me end with this encouragement. Hearing God is a relationship skill. The more you walk with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes. You will make mistakes sometimes, but God is patient. He corrects, He redirects, and He guides.
I declare over your life that confusion is breaking. I declare that your ears are opening. I declare that God’s voice will become clearer, stronger, and more familiar to you. You will not miss your steps. You will walk in peace, confidence, and direction. In Jesus name.
